Barley & Vine's nachos are the draw, the drink selection, vibe is why you stay

NEWBERG — I’ll admit this week I went somewhere I’ve frequented a few times in my two-plus years living in Yamhill County, but when you need a great nacho - you just need to get you a great nacho.

Downtown Newberg’s Barley & Vine has been a go-to spot for me when I’m Jonesing (pun intended) for nachos and I was feeling it this week.

Warning: The nachos come in full, half and quarter size - but know the portions are incredibly generous so order wisely. While I waited for mine, I saw an employee carrying out a full-sized portion in each hand and I swear there might have been a little shaking of the hands and a bead of sweat trying to maneuver those bad boys outside.

I always add meat - usually carnitas - and there’s just a beautiful mix of toppings that keep it from being a soggy mess or a plate of chips with a dusting of toppings. Cheese, sour cream, tomatoes, jalapenos and parsley adorn this magnificent creation. And, for nachos, they are surprisingly light on the stomach. I’ve probably ordered them a half dozen times and they haven’t missed yet with them.

But this place is far more than a good place to grab nachos. When I went, there were 16 different drinks on tap (mostly beer) - giving you plenty of options. I’m a “basic IPA bro” so I had the Von Ebert hazy IPA, and it definitely hit the spot.

There’s an array of wine and cocktails as well - along with a fridge full of drink options so going thirsty here is an impossibility.

Being on the main drag of downtown Newberg, there’s a buzz - even on the weekday night I was there. The cool gray walls, dark floors, retro leather (or pleather?) furniture, modern light fixtures, plants and string lights creates a vibe for sure.

And of course, outdoor seating for those who want to brave 99 - though once you hit after 7 p.m. the traffic is definitely much lighter.

Maybe the best way I can describe Barley & Vine is welcoming - for all. There’s just a comfort walking into the establishment. You can come in on a date night or right after running a 5K and fit right in.

OK, now let me get back to my nachos.
