McMinnville softball, Newberg baseball fall in state quarterfinals; YCHS, Dayton advance to semis in 3A softball

Both of Yamhill County's 6A squads still remaining in the state playoffs fell while both of the 3A teams advanced to the semifinals in Friday's quarterfinal baseball and softball action.

The No. 14 McMinnville softball team (15-13) fell to Pacific Conference foe and sixth-seeded Glencoe (24-6), 5-0 in Hillsboro while Newberg baseball (23-7) took a 2-0 lead on No. 2 Tualatin (24-6) into the bottom of the fourth before falling 11-4.

In 3A softball, No. 3 Yamhill-Carlton (26-3) had no trouble with No. 6 Scio (22-6) in an 11-3 win at home while No. 4 Dayton (23-5) looked strong in a 4-1 win over No. 5 Banks (22-5) in Dayton.

Up next for YCHS is a semifinal matchup with No. 2 South Umpqua (26-2) on the road Tuesday in Myrtle Creek while Dayton will make the trip east to take on top-seeded and undefeated Vale (28-0) - also on Tuesday.
